DUMAGUETE CITY AWARDED AS ONE OF THE "TOP EMERGING BUSINESS DESTINATIONS" IN THE PHILIPPINES FOR 2010
Recently the Department of Tourism (DoT) and the Philippine Tour Operations Association (PHILTOA) announced awarded Dumaguete City as one of the "Top Emerging Business Destinations" in the Philippines for 2010. To be considered under the list, the destination must meet all the criteria of having good accessibility, communication network, availability of meeting facilities and standard accommodation.
Dumaguete City is best identified with the region's best universities such as Silliman University, nearby islands of Sumilon and Apo, and several white sand beaches, and dive sites. Dumaguete City is refered to as a University Town because of the presence of four universities and colleges in a small city. The province has a high simple literacy rate of 93.9% as of 2000 and 83.8% functional literacy rate as of 2000. The city is also a popular educational destination for students of surrounding provinces and cities in Visayas and Mindanao. The city's ambience and tranquil, moderate way of life make it conducive to learning. Because of this, Dumaguete City's outsourcing industry is growing, vastly diversified with services ranging from call centers, publishing, medical transcription, animation, editing, architectural outsourcing and many more. Dumaguete City is becoming one of the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Information Techology (IT) hubs of the Philippines.
Dumaguete has three major hospitals namely the Holy Child Hospital, Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital, and the Silliman Medical Center which is currently tied-up with St.Luke's Medical Center in Metro Manila.
"Dumaguete" was coined from the Visayan word "daggit" which means "to snatch". Because of the frequent marauding attacks of Muslim pirates on the coastal town, and the power to attract and keep her visitors for good, the word "dumaguet", meaning "to swoop," was christened to the village of Dumaguete. However, Diego Lopez Povedano in 1572 indicated the place as "Dananguet." But in 1734, Murillo Velarde referred to it, using its present name, as Dumaguete. In the midst of Dumaguete's march towards urbanization, its old charm will always captivate both local and foreign visitors.
