Five things to avoid in Manila

Over the course of my senseless nomadic excursions across Southeast Asia, I have certainly picked up a few tricks of the trade, as well as a general sense of appreciation for each unique type of adventure certain regions can can offer to wanderers such as myself!  Although it can be generally helpful know what you should do when visiting a foreign country, knowing what NOT to do is almost certainly more important!

Having visited Manila on countless occasions, I could spend days telling you where to go, where to eat, what to pay, and so much more.  With that said, there are countless handy articles on that!  Instead, let us focus on what you should avoid, that way your vacation will be much more relaxing!

DON'T try seafood that is sold on the streets your first few days there.  Although it is generally sanitary, your body is not ready for the type of cooking just yet.  Settle in first, eat at a few restaurants, go to dinner at a friends house and adjust to more moderate styles of Pinoy cooking before you dive right in.  Just like the whether, sleep, and most things foreign, food takes a few days before your body is perfectly acclimated.  Eating seafood from vendors too early could have you laying on your back drinking  pepto bismol the first few days of your stay.

DON'T go too far outside of the cities without a tour guide, whether it be a professional, a family member, or a friend.  The roads all look alike, you can get lost very easily, and English dissipates once you leave the metro manila area.

DON'T mistake kindness for weakness. Filipino people are often very happy at heart and usually don a smile.  With that said, just because somebody is smiling at you it does not mean you are welcome.  If you are rude to what appears as a very mild mannered person, you could find yourself in an awkward situation, as rudeness from tourist is moderately tolerated but sometimes quickly reciprocated.  Be courteous.

DON'T take the first price offered to you unless you are in a department store at a mall or something official like that.  nearly all stores mark up their prices and expect people to barter.

DON'T get into a Taxi unless you have a metered taxi or have already agreed on a price.  Sometimes greedy drivers will go in circles, purposely hit traffic, or even take you to a wrong location.

About the Author

My name is M. Gwapito and although I have a deep passion for writing, i'm not typically spotted with a pen and a pad!  Generally I can be seen in a Makati bar enjoying Manila Nightlife!  It is always the day after where I have to nurse a vicious migraine where I turn to the comfort of a pad and a pen for relief!
