Manila Hostel

manila hostel"manila hostel"
backpacking south east asia?

Hey everyone thankx for reading this first.
well hmm i am heading of to asia soon on the 3rd of february, landing in the philippines but going for 6 weeks.
do you think 3600 australian dollars is enough to go for 9-10 weeks.
i want to travel over to malaysia and go up to thailand also when i am there, be backpacking, and in manila i have free accomodation with friends, so do you think $3600 is enough for food, backpackers, hostels, a few small souveneirs, and flight with budget airlines from manila-kuala lumpur, bangkok-manila. thankx

Let me do an estimated calculation for you ( based on budget/backpacking expenses )

Food - for A$5 a day you could get decent meals in these countries. Add in additional A$3 a day for occassionally western food/fast food.
Your expenses on food would be A$8 x 7 days x 10 weeks =A$560

Accomodation - set aside around A$20 a day for budget accomodation ( backpacking hotel/hostel ) At certain places you could get a place to stay below that amount while at other places you probably have to pay slightly more than that. In Malaysia and Thailand for A$35/day you could a decent non -star rated hotel with all the normal facilities attached. So let's assume you spend average A$25/day, your expense would be A$35 x 7 days x 4 weeks = A$700 ( excluding the 6 weeks free accomodation in Philippines )

If you are in Malaysia ( Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahur, Penang ) , i strongly recommend this hotel http://www.tunehotels.com. This is a low-cost, no frill hotel just like its sister company, Air Asia. You'll get a very basic room with a bed and closet, bathroom, a fan that's about all. For air-conditioning you have to buy credit hours to use it. You have to pay for toiletries too if you want to. Despite of this, this hotel is very decent, clean and located in the city centers.

Just to give you an idea, on 6th April , the room in Kuala Lumpur cost A$13.10 a night. Even if you purchase a few hours of air-condition, it would still be very cheap.

Air Travel - use budget airlines. The following two airlines are strongly recommened especially AirAsia.

http://www.airasia.com
http://www.cebupacificair.com

Just for to give you an idea i went into the websites and check out for you.

Assuming you travel on 6th April from Manila to Kuala Lumpur
Air Asia fare = A$113
Cebu Pacific = A$146

Assuming you travel on 18th April from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok
Air Asia fare = A$30.38
Cebu Pacific = does not serve this sector

For AirAsia, do choose your date of travel / time of travel wisely. As different dates have different fares. Even different flights on the same day ( as in the Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok example above ) have different fares. Sometimes, these differences could be as much as 100%.

I have added all the expenses above and it comes to A$1550. So it means you have around A$2000 spare to spend on bus/train/taxi travels, some shopping and even some "luxuries" on food/accomodation.
