12 Ways to Create Your Own Family Christmas Holiday Tradition - Part II

Family Christmas Holiday Tradition gives us freedom and guidance in a time that is otherwise hectic and stressful, and often unorganized. Tradition gives us a blueprint of how our family anticipates and loves the holiday season, what they expect, how they love to celebrate.

This is Part II of our Family Christmas Holiday Tradition. (Read Part I also for great holiday ideas.)

7. When the holiday draws nearer, we children got more and more excited. When we were high-spirited and tempestuous, mom just needed to say. "Look, an angle's hair!" And we would look in awe and see really a golden hair. Little did we know that mom must have made some gift packages and the golden threat must have fallen on the floor. But for us children this was a sure sign that Christmas was near. Mom left signs of the coming holy night everywhere for us, so we would remember to be good, and patient, and kind. This made it easier for us children, who yearned for that long awaited Christmas Day!

8. Then, one day the wait was over - the 24th of December dawned. We children had to take a little afternoon nap - I am sure mom needed the time to make last adjustments to the Christmas tree and the arrangement of our Christmas presents. In Europe the Christmas tree is the highlight of the 24th. The tree is hidden from view for children, and for the first time seen in the holy night when the door to the Christmas room magically opens. The room is locked already the night before Christmas. We children were especially attentive - maybe we would hear a movement in the Christmas room - maybe an angle came by - or the Christkind personally - to bring presents!

9. The nap on the 24th was very hard for us kids. Who can sleep when such an excitement lies in the air? When we finally got up, we laid on our best clothes. Then mom came with the traditional Christmas storybook! It was a story of a little boy named Heinele, who's mother had sent him out in rags into the bitter cold winter night to sell toys to the busy people on the streets - who rushed home to their family celebration without even noticing him. The boy went into the woods and as he looked in the snow - lonely and ice cold - he found the Golden Star of Christmas.

At the same time in heaven, the angles were hectic, looking for the Golden Star that Christkind had lost as it flew over the winter world on earth. Finally they found the frozen boy, holding the Golden Star tight in his hand. He was dead. They took the boy into heaven. Here it was warm. It gave plenty to eat, and Heinele was truly happy - probably for the first time in his young life. But the good boy, as he saw that his mother in the cold house down on earth was crying because her child did not come home, returned to earth to comfort his mom, bringing her true Christmas love. Love reigned over the joy and comfort of staying in heaven. A true sacrifice.

And while we children hang on every word that came from mom's lips, suddenly - first faint but then louder - we heard the clear Christmas bell. It signaled that Christkind was here! We would rash to the Christmas room. The doors silently swung open. And we would stand there in awe, still and devout, our wide open eyes reflecting Christmas Spirit. The Christmas tree would stand in all its magic beauty - brightly shining with many real candles and magic stars. We would sing Christmas carols and dad would read the Christmas story from the Holy Bible.

Finally we children could rush to our Christmas presents - many big and little gift-wrapped boxes in all colors, decorated with beautiful ribbons and a fir twig on each gift box. We had each a little extra corner right under the Christmas tree, and close to the crib where Maria and Josef and the beautiful baby would remind us of the reason for our joy. To find our space, the packages had little cards with our names on them. And the Ah and Oh was great!

10. And mom did not forget the lonely people outside. She put a warm shining candle in each window to greet those who were lonely and cold this night.

11. The Christmas dinner was another highlight of the day. We had our traditional fish dinner with potato salad which I loved. The table was set with grace and glister. Each set had a mandarin that held a Christmas candle. Fir twigs were decorating the table. It was festive and the candle light reflected in our smiles!

12. The Midnight Christmas mass was for the older kids. I remember sitting in church and seeing the happy smiles on every face. This alone showed me that in this special night a miracle must have occurred. I could see the new hat, the new shawl, new boots that people were wearing. Everyone had something new this night. And if it was not a new piece of cloth, it was the renewed hope and light in their heart that held the promise that life is good and all is well, no matter the life circumstances.

Today I am old. My children are out of the house and I am alone again. But at Christmas time, I still remember my family's holiday tradition: the haunting scent of Christmas; the dazzling light that lightens the eye that looks into the world with hope; music and laughter that fills the hearts and the room at Christmas eve. I thank my parents for the wonderful Christmas tradition that they had given us - a tradition that lives on ...

I am holding a Philippine Passport with a valid German visa till 2010. I want to go for holidays like lets say in United Kingdom or Swietzerland. Do I still need to apply for a Visa in those countries? Thanks in advance.

I am 21 and unfortunately I am an undergraduate. I stopped from school and now I am working as a call center agent ( Product Support representative--technical support) . I am a third year college student taking up BS Marine Biology. I had my PADI Open water diver license already. This year I'll be taking up the second level of diver's License, which is the advance open water training diver course. I wanted to work and live abroad.

There are worker exchange programs for students that will get you into the US for a few months (with a work Visa). Check with your University for the names of programs that they've dealt with and trust (since there are some fraudulent programs out there).

Also, check with your University to see if you can keep your status even while you're working. Some schools can keep your status active (or as temporarily away) for a fee, even if you're taking a semester off. It will probably be easier to find a worker program as a student.

I just want to take the easiest course that will allow me to scuba dive.

I would like to know if anyone has experience with these courses, and what are the cheapest and best ones out there.

Also, if I have no previous scuba diving experience, can I still scuba dive? What is my quickest way to get certification? I just want to spend time underwater!

I don't know the best or cheapest.
You can just show up and figure it out pretty quickly.
If you want a shallow water license you don't need previous experience.

The resort is one of the several resorts that lined the beach of Brgy. Saud. Within the resort is a restaurant, a souvenir shop, a swimming pool, and huts. Our room, with a front veranda, was good for 4, but can accommodate an extra person (for an extra charge, of course). It was airconditioned with its own T/B and full length mirror. In addition, we were allowed to occupy one hut near the beach for relaxation and "bonding" time, at no additional cost. It was really a good decision that we chose to stay here; the staff were hospitable and always on hand to assist.

What made our stay more pleasant are the policies of the resort on security, noise level, and drinking which are ideal for a family vacation. If you're concerned about security, the resort's gate is close from 6pm-6am and a security guard is on duty 24 hours. Drinking of alcoholic beverages is allowed within the confine of your rented room and not in common areas, not even at the huts. And, you can sing with the videoke machine to your heart's content, but the volume should be kept to a level that cannot disturb the other guests.

Kapuluan Vista Resort
Price range varies and suits a wide range of budgets. Cheapest accommodations are the dorm-type fan rooms, costing about 500 per person per day. On the uppity side, you can have an airconditioned room with your own bathroom with hot and cold water for about 1,000 per head and upwards. If you get the nicest rooms you will have a bathtub, a small zen garden, and your own little cabana overlooking the coast.

Panzzian Beach and Mountain Resort
Panzzian is a Beach and Mountain Resort. Although the sand is not as white as the beaches in Saud, one can still enjoy the resort as the place is very relaxing and comfy. The staffs are friendly and nice. The resort owner took time to chat and mingle with us =) The airconditioning on our room was not working well and the staff are nice enough to offer us an alternative room. But since we booked for 2 rooms and opted to be near each other, they gave us instead free breakfast in exchange for the faulty aircon. Luckily, the weather was cool during the time of our visit, around 15degrees F, so we just requested for an electric fans w/c they readily provided for us. Advice on locating persons who buy for gift shops at hotels/resorts?

I'm getting into the custom plush business and would like to locate some contacts to market my idea to within hotels/resorts. I've heard that some hotel chains work with certain distributors for their gift shops. Anyone have any advice for me?

I worked in hotels for years. Hotels are managed by different companies. So they all do things differently. For example, you can go to one Holiday Inn and their gift shop may be run by the front desk manager, but the Holiday Inn on the other side of town will have a gift shop that is run by an outside company. They just lease the space.

I would suggest that you call the hotel and ask for the Front office manager. Tell him/her that you have just gotten into the custom plush business and you're not sure who you should talk to regarding their gift shop. Nearly all the Front office managers that I have dealt with are nice and would be more than happy to point you in the right direction. Just be a regular person. Don't come off as a sales person.

The other thing I would suggest is to "get in the corridor" as they say. Get a job at a hotel gift shop. Talk with the manager about suppliers. Get a feel for what customers/guests are looking for, Talk with guests about plush animals, look at the boxes that come in from UPS to see what companies they are coming from. After you have your info (a week or two) quit. You will learn more in one week by being on the inside then you can imagine. This is a technique that is suggested in the book Secrets of the Millionaire Mind as well as others.

Supposing the Philippines has only enough budget to improve either its tourism industry OR its educational system. Which should it be and why? Consider this a mock debate so please pick only ONE side. I enjoin everyone to share his/her view. Thank you.

I would choose to improve the educational system. A country's greatest asset is its own people, who needs adequate and relevant training in order to increase awareness and develop proficiency necessary for their and the community's advancement. Even if local job opportunities were scarce, Pinoys with marketable skills could find employment elsewhere and send money back home, thus contributing to the improvement of the economy. Developed nations have productive workforce due to excellent educational systems in place, while they do not necessarily have strong tourism industries.

Dilemma in Cosmetic Plastic Surgery

This is one thing for sure that I, as a Plastic Surgeon could share to anybody very much interested in enhancing their physical appearance.

Today, that the public have an increased interest in cosmetic surgery or physical enhancement either medical or surgical and with the market population increasing day by day. A lot of physicians, even non plastic surgeons and worse of all non doctors would like to get involve in cosmetic business. They would introduce them self as a cosmetic consultant or cosmetic surgeon even without undergoing formal training in Plastic Surgery.

Therefore it would be best for any prospective clients to carefully scrutinize the credentials or qualification of the person you seek consult with, in order to be assured of the quality of your surgeon. However, there are others that would organize and form their own group of surgeons to form a cosmetic organization to boost their qualifications and credentials.

The sole society or organization in the Philippines that is recognized locally by the Philippine College of Surgeons and internationally by the American College of Surgeon, American Society of Plastic Surgeon and ASEAN Congress of Plastic Surgeon to monitor and regulate the practice of cosmetic surgery and training of future plastic surgeons is the Philippine Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons - PAPRAS. This prestigious assembly of Plastic Surgeons demand from its members certain qualifications and standards in term of academic and training, to assure the public of a safe and quality surgeons. So it is prudent if you would inquire from your surgeon, his affiliation to the society (PAPRAS).  It goes with out saying that PAPRAS membership or affiliation would be the seal of excellence in the practice of cosmetic surgery in the Philippines.

To clarify things out and to make the public aware, Cosmetic Surgery should be performed by a Plastic surgeon with adequate and formal training in cosmetic/aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. Plastic surgeons are both cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon, and Reconstructive surgery is a prerequisite for all plastic surgeon before they finish their training and be certified member of the society (PAPRAS). It would take 6 to 8 years of formal training and 2 qualifying national specialty exams (Given by the Philippine Boards of Plastic) after medical school before a doctor could claim himself a Plastic Surgeon. Training is very essential, because it is through these years of training that plastic surgeon is able to gain knowledge to do cosmetic procedure, differentiate high-quality result from dreadful outcome, and learn to identify, prevent and treat complications.

However there are alot of doctors and even non physician that don’t want to take the longer road to be a plastic surgeon, since they think that they could deceive the unsuspecting client. Usually they call themselves cosmetic surgeon but such term does not exist, they usually undergo a 6 to12 months of observership locally or from other country without hands-on training, then afterwards they offer and perform cosmetic surgical procedures to any interested punter.

For the benefit of the majority, the public must be information that there are only few Certified Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon in the Philippines. There are only less than 300 certified member of the society (PAPRAS - Philippine Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery).

So, the only thing that we plastic surgeons could advice you and/or your friends when planning to have any cosmetic procedure please ask if the doctor is a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon and not just a cosmetic surgeon and then ask the surgeon if he/she is a member of the Philippine Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons - PAPRAS for you to be sure of the qualification of your surgeons.
