Things to do in Manila: shopping at Wine Capital of Philippines, Clark Freeport Zone

A wide variety of back vintages of Bordeaux, Burgundy and wines from all major wine regions of the world are the shopping pleasures of wine lovers coming to Clark Philippines from Manila, Cebu and all over Asia.  Most are impressed by the availability of good value labels, which are not that famous and therefore hardly seen in Asia.  Although many novice Asian wine lovers and collectors stick to big names with high point ratings, more experienced wine collectors and connoisseurs scour the wine shops in Clark for these rare finds.  Wine connoisseurs in Philippines are smart and go for better values in the Cru Bourgeois for Bordeaux and the lesser known domaines and negociants wines - especially the 1er cru wines - in Burgundy.

A must for wine enthusiasts visiting this wine capital of Philippines is a visit to Clark Wine Center which is located along the main highway M A Roxas in Clark.  This stand-alone two storey white building isn't impressive from the outside but once the little door on the side of the building opens, there are thousands of liquid treasures waiting for the wine shoppers to indulge and have a great time.

Wine shoppers discover a convenient nightlife spot to enjoy the fine wines they just acquired during a day of wine shopping in Angeles Cit Clark Freeport Zone.  There is a fine-dining wine restaurant called Yats Restaruant and Wine Bar in Clark Philippines  http://www.YatsRestaurant.com.  This restaurant is located inside the Mimosa Leisure Estate which also houses a 36-hole championship golf club called Mimosa Golf, as well as a casino.  Serving French Mediterranean cuisine with an award-winning 3000-line wine list, this upscale restaurant also has a wine bar called Magnum Room, opened 5pm everyday for before and after-dinner relaxation.  Saturday evenings see BYOB dinners at Yats Restaurant where local wine lovers back from travels abroad, gather with their recent shopping discoveries over a specially prepared wine-friendly dinner and corkage fee is waived.

Public wine tastings are held from time to time in Clark and sometimes in Manila.  Tickets range from p1000 to p1500 for these themed events that are professionally run –no wine merchants sponsorship, pushy salesmen or tacky banners to ruin the evening.  Each ticket contains a certain number of stubs that can be redeemed for a tasting pour of a wine of choice among those on a line-up.   Very often, the lineup contains wines that are quite old and expensive.

Clark is packed with action, so wine shopping aside, there are other meaningful things to spend some quality time.  Those looking for peace and quiet find their way to nearby Clearwater Resort located in the central business district of Clark Freeport.  For a more invigorating night at the local pub, the English-styled London Pub is a popular gathering place for foreigners and locals living in Angeles City, Subic and Clark.

All in all, the wine lifestyle in Clark is more than just hours and hours of shopping and bargain hunting.  A day of wine in Clark includes a fine wine dinner, a bit of wine tasting perhaps and along with that anything one can imagine to enjoy with wine.  It is no wonder that Clark is not the wine capital of the Philippines and fast gaining popularity and approval for wine lovers from all over the world.

Getting to this wine shop in Angeles City Clark Philippines

Getting to Clark Wine Center is quite simple:  after entering Clark Freeport from Dau and Angeles City, proceed straight along the main highway M A Roxas. Clark Wine Center is the stand-along white building on the right, at the corner A Bonifacio Ave.

Been to the Arizona International Hotel?

How are the facilities / amenities / services? How are the rooms? Is this a beach resort? Is there a pool? What could you say about the place? What are their rates? How would it compare to other beach resorts such as Camayan, By The Sea Resort, or the Subic Int'l Hotel? I've been to all those places' websites but I want to know from people who've been to those places.

I am with Seahorse tours in Subic Bay freeport and we put guest into most of the hotels in the subic bay area. I can say that in its price range arizona has the highest level of customer satisfaction and repeat business from our guest. It is a beach resort with a nice swimming beach and does have a swimming pool. room are comfortable with cable tv, air con, hot and cold showers, room service, in room safe but the standard rooms are a little small. deluxe rooms are fine. the hotel has an poolside bar and grill with reasonably priced food. very good customer service. it is located in Barrio Barretto of Olongapo and near other restaurants and easy trip to area attractions. Camayan Beach resort is better, rooms are larger ( except if compared to Arizona's Family rooms)and will take up to 5 people. the beach is by far the best in the area with some of the greatest views in the Philippines. however it is more than twice as expensive. it is located out by Ocean adventure and there are limited activities nearby. If you do not want to eat at the resort it is a 20 minute drive to another restaurant. By the sea is near to Arizona, its price is lower but the rooms are only marginal, some do not have relaiable hot water.it does have a beach similar to Arizona. Subic international hotel is not near a beach but does have a nearby swimming pool. The quality of the rooms vary and we can only recommend the "delta" building rooms.

Subic Hotels And Resorts

Looking for a great, high-end (?) resort in Luzon. Any suggestions?

Going on a roadtrip and looking to spend 10,000-a-night on a boutique hotel/resort.

Something like Lighthouse in Subic ( http://www.lighthousesubic.com/ ) or Acuatico in Laiya ( http://www.acuaticoresort.com.ph/ ).

Willing to drive 6 hours tops. Any ideas?
Hi. Please no narky answers. This is the first vacation I've had in five years. And I'd like to be pampered for a change. I know 10K's a lot, but I saved up for it. Please don't tell me how to spend my money. (Yes, Dom, I'm looking at you and your self-righteous answer.)

For a great pampering, go to Segara Villas in Subic. It is better than Lighthouse. Indulge yourself in this spa-hotel, where all accommodations are in villas. A villa I got is called Denpasar, costing me P10,900 per day.

I refer you to my reply to a question about Subic where I even compared Lighthouse with Segara Villas. The links are also there.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AsG755QCdkZCl6T0l8BPkXjty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100212090254AALHvcZ&show=7#profile-info-k1GnXuqPaa

Or you can go to Punta Fuego in Nasugbu, Batangas. Punta Fuego id the Forbes Park of beaches. But you must find a friend who can refer you, because Punta Fuego is exclusively for homeowners, members, and their guests. There are beautiful cabanas for members and guests who did not build beach homes in Punta Fuego. There is a wharf for yachts, and a beautiful golf course overlooking the ocean. Or you may just want to laze around their infinity pools, in different locations within the complex.

The two other alternatives are Anvaya Cove in Morong and Tagaytay Highlands, both of which are also members-only. But chances are you or your friends know some who are members.

Anvaya Cove is the Ayala Group's response to the high-end Punta Fuego.

I trust you will like both places when you see them, or even by first going into their website. Please just google.

Go ahead and indulge, nothing wrong with it. We all deserve worldly pleasures every so often.

Wildlife Getaways in the Philippines

The Philippines is certainly an envy of other countries because of its rich natural resources. Comprising some 7,107 islands, the archipelago has one of the world's highest biodiversities. Various plant and animal species that are endemic to the country have been attracting wildlife experts and nature lovers to the Philippines.

Local environment department officials said the Philippines is home to some 1,137 species of amphibians, birds, and mammals. However, around half of them are now considered "threatened" due to man-made perturbations. Forest denudation, illegal hunting, poaching, and urbanization have been destroying wildlife habitat. This has been a cause for concern of environment preservation groups over the past years.

To raise awareness on environment protection, related government agencies and public groups are organizing guided tours to showcase the country's wildlife.  Here is a guide to some of the wildlife parks and nature centers in the Philippines.

Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary
One of the leading tourist attractions in the island paradise of Palawan is the Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary. This 3,700-hectare sanctuary, which opened in 1976, is home to various animal species such as giraffe, zebra, bushbuck, gazelle, elands, deer, and other exotic local and African animals. There are also more than 70 bird species living at the Calauit Wildlife Sanctuary.

Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary
Located in the island province of Bohol, the Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary is also a must-go destination for travelers looking to explore the Philippine wildlife. This 134-hectare shelter serves as a breeding and protection center for the Philippine tarsier, one of the world's smallest primates. Around 500 tarsiers are currently housed inside the sanctuary, where exotic birds such a serpent eagles, parrots, grass owls can be found.

Albay Park and Wildlife
Aside from Mayon Volcano, Albay is also making a name on wildlife conservation. Set in Legazpi, Albay Park and Wildlife hosts more than 400 animals such as mammals, birds, and reptiles. Visitors can get up close and personal with a number of raptor species such as grass owl, Philippine eagle owl, and Brahminy kite. The park also allows guests to relax with its amenities such as a food court and picnic groves.

Zoobic Safari
Enjoy an ultimate safari adventure in the Philippines by visiting a 25-hectare amusement park in Subic, Zambales. Zoobic Safari offers a number of attractions such as Tiger Safari, where some 400-pound tigers are roaming around. Snakes from around the world, meanwhile, are featured at the Serpentarium. Visitors can also set their feet on steel walkway where over 200 crocodiles are resting below.

Exploring Philippine wildlife doesn't end from the above-mentioned parks and sanctuaries. You can also spend a day in Donsol, Sorsogon, for some whale shark viewing, or visit Olango Island, which serves as a stopover of more than 50,000 migrating birds. There many other wildlife getaway destinations to choose from whether you are in Luzon, Visayas, or Mindanao.

Local Philippines is your travel buddy. We have information about the destinations, how to get there, what to do while in the area and more! Destinations in the beaches or in the mountains, destinations under water, destinations right at the middle of the urban hub, name it and Local Philippines will most likely feature it.

Should A Coal Plant Be Built in Subic Bay?

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority and Aboitiz are building a 300 megawatt coal plant at the mouth of Subic Bay, Philippines. This area is one of the top eco-tourism destinations in the Philippines. The builders say the project will provide much needed future energy but residents say it is a travesty to put a coal-fired plant at the mouth of the Bay, which is a protected marine reserve. What is your view? - The Subic Bulletin (www.subicbulletin.blogspot.com)

Coal-fired Power Plants represents 36% of total carbon emmisions. I live in Pagbilao, Quezon, where the government built a 700 MW plant, The Trees(Forest), The Sea (Pagbilao Bay) and the people are dying.
