What is it like for an American to be retired and living in the Philippines? Hey Joe.

If you have not been to the Philippines but always wanted to go, it is a wonderful place to go. I love the Philippines and I love being retired here because it is so laid back and slow pace.

The people are wonderful and always are courteous and kind even when they are so poor. I love the Filipino people. There are the bad elements too, but overall it is a great place to come and live and invest your money.

Everything is in English, and all English speaking people will get along fine here as most everyone can speak English in some degree. Since I live here I have started learning the language and speak a small amount. Filipino's love to hear a foreigner speak their language.

One thing you will hear a lot of as you walk along the streets is the phrase "Hey Joe" where you going Joe. If you are a single man walking in the streets you may hear "Marry me Joe". I just smile and move on.

There are some adventures you need to avoid. If you come here, do not attempt to rent a car and drive yourself. You will be in for a shock if you do. Always have a driver drive you around. Taxi's are very reasonable in price but always insist that your ride be on the meter. Taxi cab drivers tend to take advantage of foreigners.

Take in the sites, and have your trip planned out so everything can be arranged ahead of time.

If you plan to invest in the Philippines seek out reputable people who have your best interest in mind. I have learned a great deal in this area and it is very important to deal with people who know what they are doing.

If you plan to buy property in the Philippines you need to look at all the parameters dealing with Real Estate. A Foreigner cannot own property but a Foreigner can own a condominium or a townhouse.

If you need property and want to control that property then you need to create a corporation. This is an area that is seldom used because few understand the laws on this. It is one the greatest tools to allow a foreigner to own property in the Philippines using a corporation.
The main thing about the Philippines they have beautiful people and they are mostly courteous and nice to you. Just try going through a McDonald's and see what kind of treatment you will get. You feel better at McDonalds than a first class restaurant in the states.

I met a lady a few months from Boston at Alona Beach Panglao, Bohol who was visiting her son. She had been here for three months and had rented a beach house. I was asking how she was enjoying herself living in that beach house by her self (she was 80 years old). She looked at me and told me she loves it. She has two maids who do all her clothes. She gets a massage every night before she goes to bed and she is having the time of her life. I told her that is the real life. I too enjoy these same things and I would not trade it for anything.

I recently went to Bohol and blogged about my travel experience.

In Tagbilaran, I stayed at the Soledad Suites which I thought gave me good value for money.

In Panglao, I stayed at Dumaluan, and got a really nice room that is closest to the beach. I will most likely book this same room in advance when I return to Panglao. One thing for sure, I will NOT stay at the much-hyped Alona Kew.

Among the resorts listed in the link you provided, I would opt for Bee Farm. I went there, too, and thought it was interesting. To me, it was like a provincial version of the famous Sonya's Garden in Alfonso/Tagaytay, but this was a beach accommodation. Even while access to the beach is not the same as when one stays at Dumaluan or at the Bohol Beach Club.

Bohol - Philippines: More Than the Usual Tourist Spot

Bohol, a small island in central Philippines, is known for the world famous and unique Chocolate Hills. It is one of the country's most popular tourist spots. It's true though that when most people think of Bohol, almost nothing else comes to mind. It might surprise you that it is more than the usual tourist spot and that there's more to explore and to see in this island than those limestone hill formations.

Bohol is home to pristine beach shores. Panglao Island, just minutes away from the capital Tagbilaran, is increasingly gaining more popularity among local and foreign tourists as a more laid-back and tranquil beach destination alternative to Boracay.

But if you're the kind who's not satisfied with having a few dips in the water and taking in spectacular beachfront views, Bohol will certainly not disappoint. Scuba divers have more than enough choices of world class diving spots surrounding the island. Colorful coral reefs and rich marine life will surely satisfy all types of explorers, from novice snorkelers to expert divers.

Another popular attraction is dolphin and whale watching. Pamilacan Island is headquarters to the best spotters that arrange these tours. Most were former hunters who joined the dolphin and whale watching program after the Philippine government banned the killing of these marine mammals.

Bohol's exotic wildlife is not limited underwater. The island's last remaining forests protect unique fauna. It is home to one of the world's smallest primates, the tarsier. You can visit the Philippine Tarsier Foundation in Corella and see the timid and peculiar animal in its natural habitat.

The Rajah Sikatuna National Park, a large forest reserve near Bilar, is a bird-watcher's paradise. Treks along the trails throughout the park can lead you to an encounter with some of the country's rare bird species.

Bohol is also a place rich with culture and history. Century-old churches in Baclayon, Loboc, Loay, Maribojoc, Loon and Dauis are a few of the standing monuments. And there are old Spanish watchtowers in Punta Cruz, Dauis, Panglao and Pamilacan.

If you want to keep away from the province's usual tourist trail, you can travel along the less popular eastern side of the island. It has some of the most amazing coastlines, and secluded beaches, from the town of Anda in the southeast to the town of Talibon in the north.

Some of the towns in Bohol also offer community-based tours. Calape, Maribojoc and Candijay are among such towns. It is a great option to visit these towns' protected mangrove areas and experience the quaint rural life in this part of the country. These tours showcase how resolute the locals are in preserving the island's natural environment.

But to really experience Bohol is to experience the people's hospitality. Try visiting the island in May when town fiestas are celebrated almost everyday. You can hop from town to town without having to bring money other than for transportation. You'd surely be invited to residents' homes and enjoy feasts of lechon baboy (roasted pig) and kinilaw (raw fish).

Bohol is an island blessed with so much bounty and natural beauty. There's no argument about that. What sets it apart from other tourist spots is that there's so much to explore and so much to do that it's actually pretty difficult to decide which one to do first. Of course, you can't pass up a visit to the impressive Chocolate Hills. But staying overnight at this famous spot just to see stunning sunrise and sunset over the surreal landscape will be well worth it.

Anyone been to Boracay recently? Were the beaches Clean?

I am arriving in the Philippines Dec 16 and having some difficulty making up my mind where to go with my fiance for a 7 day romantic, relaxing beach vacation before heading to Olongapo to see family. I keep reading that Boracay is no longer that nice, and that it's beaches are dirty and overcrowded with tourists, is this true?

I was leaning more towards Bohol but I'm still not sure. My budget is about $100 a night so Palawan is out of reach for me. Malapascua seems very affordable and quoted to be the "new Boracay" but it is a long journey to get there. And I am coming off of 26 hours travel time to get to Manila from Florida, but staying one night in Manila to recover. Any reccomendations where to stay and which resort to stay in would be greatly appreciated...

This is my opinion so take it for what its worth to you. Boracay was very disapointing.. Way too many tourists and parties. Now if that's what you like then fine go there, but as far as the beach being clean, yes it is still clean considering the amount of people, however a clean beach to me is pointless when it's so crowded and noisey. If it weren't for the recent oil spill, I would recommend the valencia area of guimaras island instead.. but maybe you're better off going to bohol in cebu.. they have some of the nicest beaches and less crowded.. or palawan.. thats another amazing place that isn't too crowded.

have you tried diving with hammerhead sharks in cabilao island ,bohol ,phlippines?

it is such a good coral garden down to 40 meters and even more....
this is not in manila but in bohol

Not yet, but I'm seriously thinking about going to manila and checking out Subic Bay in Sept. or Oct. But if I get the chance, I'd love to go dive with hammerheads! Taking my underwater video camera! WOO HOO!!!

I love scuba diving! I already enjoyed diving around Cebu island, Bohol island. They were awesome!
So, will you tell me popular diving spots around Luzon island, the biggest island in Phillipine?
I would thank you as well, if you add some good diving services to guide me there.

Subic bay gets my vote. the diving is different then around Bohol and cebu. the visibility is not as good however Subic bay is the wreck dive center of the Philippines. about a dozen wrecks within recreational dive limits and within 15 minutes of a dive center. has some reefs also but the attraction is the wrecks. if you are not wreck certified they still make great dives around the outside of the wrecks. the USS New York is considered the Grand Dam of the wrecks. a Armour cruiser built before the Spanish American war she saw duty all over the world ending up in Subic bay before WWII. taken out to deeper water she was scuttled to keep her out of the hands of the Japaneses as she was inoperative at the time but was able to be repaired and had sets of 8 inch guns. they are still in place at 65 feet. what i also like about subic bay diving is that subic bay is a full tourist destination in its own so there is many off gas activities available. see the web sites below for more info the dive website gives a list of dive sites and information about them also dive operators, the other sites have tourism information such as hotels and what to do.seahorse tours has dive packages. the travel guide includes dive info
