Few outdoors activities can be more fascinating than island-hopping if planned right. In this article, I will cover some pointers which will guide you through the maze of Philippines island-hopping and how you and your partner can have a pleasurable time doing it. If you live in the mainland United States and want to do some island-hopping, then that is tough. So, let us take a trip to the Philippines and check out the possibility of island-hopping there.

Philippines Island-hopping is second to none because the Philippines, as an island, is composed of 7,100 islands located in Southeast Asia. What makes Philippine island-hopping in this island paradise even more enticing is that you it will not cost you an arm and a leg. If you are a nature lover, then you will enjoy every minute of  your visit and activities: fine white sand beaches, excellent and delectable meals, and breath-taking sceneries. You will also enjoy all kinds of water sports activities: scuba diving, parasailing, surfing, and snorkeling.

How would you answer this question, "What would you do with 7,100 islands in one country?"  Exploring some of them could be an obvious response, if time is on your side.  At any rate, this is probably what you may be doing during your upcoming trip to the Philippines.

You have decided to go Philippines island-hopping, grab a piece of paper and jot down a plan. Make it real, doable, and flexible. As you will venture out in foreign territories, make sure that you include a plan B within your overall plan because sometimes the ferries run late, the plane may delay, and a host of other unknown factors caused by Mother Nature.

Time is an important factor to consider in your plan. Let us say you want to go to Cebu, a province of the Philippine for island-hopping. Supposedly, upon your arrival from the USA, you stay at a hotel in Manila, the capital city. It will take around 45 minutes to get from Manila to Cebu by air. All things considered, when you arrive in Cebu City, Cebu, you may want to rest a bit and begin your island-hopping journey the next day. In all probability, you need a day to move from one island to the next.

In your journey, you will use domestic flights, small boat, known as bancas for short trip, roro boats, and ferries for longer ones, if needed. On land, you may have to take public transportation, such as buses, taxis, and vehicle-for-hire or hire a private car with driver at very reasonable cost. There will be plenty of food and drinks to satisfy your needs nearly everywhere. These should not be a big concern to you. Make sure that you carry your own potable water or drink water from sealed water bottles only.

You can plan to island-hop the following destinations once you are in Cebu City: Bohol, Mactan Island, Negros Oriental, Leyte, Siquijor, and even more. For the sake of the argument, among these five islands, I will show you how to island-hop Bohol and Leyte only. You can easily do the others based on the first two, if needed, applying the same proceedings and principles.

Let us proceed. Make sure you check the Philippine Calendar for holidays as these could dampen your tour. You should travel very light. Wear comfortable clothes and water-proof shoes. You should carry a light backpack and a water-proof camera, if you have one. Do not rely on ATMs or banks; therefore, you should carry cash or Philippine currency. On an average, you should spend roughly 1100 Philippine currency or pesos or $26 per day on island-hopping or more, and that should cover transportation, food, and miscellaneous.

PART II of this article will follow. I will share with you how to travel from Manila to Cebu by air, from Cebu, how to go island-hopping to Bohol and Leyte, using sea and land transportation means. Stay tuned.

Renew and Apply for Philippine Passort Using the DFA Appointment System

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has recently launched their online appointment system website which is a do-it-yourself site where you can set an appointment for the renewal or application of your Philippine passport.

In the past years, Filipinos have been accustomed to processing their passport renewals and applications through travel agencies and other third-party companies who are authorized by the DFA. These companies and agencies profit by charging a processing fee. It was working like a well-oiled machine until the day when magnetic passports were introduced. This required a personal appearance for the applicant, whether it was for a Philippine passport renewal or a new application. Furthermore, actual image capturing is done on site.

As part of the DFA's effort to extend its services to Filipino citizens, they launched their official DFA Appointment System website for passport renewal and application. Within a few minutes, the applicant can choose a set date and time when he will go to the DFA to renew his passport or apply for a new one. The website also includes all the necessary information such as document requirements and other helpful hints related to the service being requested.

As applications for renewals piled up in the recent months, there have been an unusal number of bad experiences. These have been "expressed in ink" through personal blog posts in the world wide web. However, there is NO other way to get it done except through the DFA. Given a few months, they should be able to adjust to their new volume of applicants and deliver service that no longer take a whole day.

Question about Boracay?

I am trying to book a hotel there for 3 nights and not sure what the difference is between Station 1, Station 2, and Station 3? Also I am looking for a beachfront hotel/resort that faces the west for a nice sunset, any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Station 1 is at the furthest most tip of the island and has the most expensive resorts.
Station 2 is in the middle and where you will find the mall, most of the restaurants and bars. The middle priced hotels are there as are the dive shops, snorkeling and banana boats.
Station 3 is nearest to the pier where you are dropped off. It has mostly native, but nice style resorts ans is the cheapest area to find a decent room (P1,500 per night).

If you can afford roughly $200 a night for a western style hotel the Boracay regency at station 2 is right on the beach. It's nice and middle of the road price wise.

Cano Island Costa Rica Snorkeling tours?

I'm planning a trip to Costa Rica for next June; I want to go snorkeling (not SCUBA diving) in Cano island. I'm trying to find a company that offers snorkeling tours, also does anyone have any suggestions for other places to snorkel in Costa Rica; the group I'm taking is mostly begginers but we want to see animals not coral. Particularly sharks and Manta Rays.

I just did the Cano Island snorkel tour in December.

In any of the small towns nearby you can easily book tours one day in advance. I find it is always better to book there and not from out of the country where you can get overcharged. I will add that it is a decent tour but not that great. Nonetheless a fine way to spend a day if you are going to be nearby.

Making Your Very Own Travel Journal

I've been on countless trips since childhood; and the one thing I regret the most is being unable to preserve those memories. Oh, sure, there may be scattered remains: orphaned photos, used plane tickets, bus stubs. But after a while, the memories start fading and you wish you had just a little bit more to remember by.

I'd love to remember all those childhood vacations spent touring the Philippines. I read about those places, and I know I went there; but for the life of me I couldn't remember much of the trip. If only I could, I'd probably be the best Philippines travel guide out there!

I give you a few ideas here to save you that regret. You'll never forget your experiences, and you'll have something nice to show your friends and family, as well. Pick one or two, or do everything!

Journaling the Journey
We were always made to write for school and for work; on your vacation, write for fun! Keep track of all the new things you experienced by scribbling and doodling things on your travel journal. The fun part is that nobody gets to grade or give feedback on it!

Getting Visual
Get your memories in color by bringing a camera with you. Make sure to have your batteries charged! When you get back from your trip, don't be lazy. Label and organize those photos in digital or printed form.

Going Multimedia
Sometimes, even photos and words are not enough. Pull out a videocam on the most memorable parts of the trip! If you go hiking somewhere, take a leaf or flower and have it pressed (make sure it's allowed first, too!).

Plot It Out
Wouldn't it be great to have a bird's eye view of all your travels? Get a map, stick it to a wall and mark all the places you visited with a pin (or a picture of you at that particular place!). If you're not the do-it-yourself type, you can always do it electronically. Which may be better in some ways, because you can also store little notes and information along with the locations.
I wish I thought of all of these while going on all those trips! I would have been a wealth of Philippines travel tips right now.

The fun part is sharing all of this with the people you love. They probably won't feel as bad because you left them behind for your trip! It would also be great to share this with the people you went on the trip with.

Philippine Travel: Ongpin Aka Chinatown

If your Asia tour includes a long stay in the Philippines, we suggest that you add in a visit to Ongpin or Chinatown, which is how most people call it as well, as part of your travel program, especially if you'll in Manila - the capital city of the country - for a while yet.

Ongpin or Chinatown may not be as popular as other places in the Philippines but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be part of your travel schedule. Not only is a visit to Ongpin guaranteed to be delightful in more ways than one, it also won't cost you much because prices in Ongpin are more affordable than what you'd find in other cities like Makati or even Quezon City.

Ongpin is also mainly a residential town so it's easier to tour the place rather than other cities, which would require you to take on huge buses and six-wheeler trucks just to cross the street.

Because Ongpin is not that big a town, the streets are mostly narrow, winding and filled with people. If you're planning to drive your own car to Ongpin, you might be forced then to park somewhere and walk for the rest of the time you'll be spending in Binondo. But that's not really much of a punishment - except for your feet, if you're wearing high heels! - because a lot of people really prefer to wander around Ongpin by foot.

Food Shopping

Fruits - Almost all kinds of fruits are sold in the streets of Ongpin and if you're feeling a bit adventurous, you could try out some of the exotic fruits being offered by street vendors such as the mangosteen or the huge apple-mango. Highly popular with the Filipino Chinese residents of Ongpin are rambutan, longgans, lanzones and chicos. When you get to Ongpin, be sure that you do try all those fruits and more since one can never get fat with fruits, anyway.

Delicacies - When you get to Ongpin, do be sure that you'll be able to make a pit stop at any of the Chinese food stores of Ongpin. One of the most popular stores of this type is Eng Bee Tin. There, you'll be able to find all sorts of Chinese delicacies that people back home would surely be delighted with.

Romblon, a cluster of 20 islands in southern Luzon, is known as the marble capital of the Philippines.
