The Adventures of Going Reef Surfing

You love to surf. You've always been into it since the time you had your first surfboard, a 21st birthday gift from your brother. Your problem however is you can only do this when you're in Hawaii while on vacation or in Siargao, Philippines while you're in the country.

The local government unit then made some precautionary measures to save the ocean and the marine life that thrives in it and set up some artificial reefs to encourage the fish and other marine creatures to live in the area. To your amazement, however, the artificial reefs are also serving as a kind of breakwater, causing "surf-able" waves in the process. This is the time you have found out about how to reef surf.

It's basically the same as ordinary surfing only that when people reef surf what they are actually surfing on are the waves produced by reefs surrounding the beach area. It's not an issue of whether it made of natural or artificial ways, what matters more is that the waves they are creating are like manna from heaven to these surf reef enthusiasts.

I must warn you though that surfing waves produced by reefs can be quite a challenge and a little bit more dangerous than surfing beaches that are naturally-wave producing. Reefs that are formed naturally have spikes in them and they are solid as a rock which makes it deadly if you'll fall off your surf board. Because falling is inevitable, you would need to wear a helmet for protection. You wouldn't want a head cut or get a concussion in the process, right? Or have your dignity crushed after a fall that could have been prevented if only you weren't showing off too much.

Never forget that reef surfing is a dangerous and challenging adventure but safety must be first priority when you go into the water in the intention of riding huge waves. Always safety first! In this manner, you can experience the joys of surfing with more confidence and excitement. You know that you are executing the right moves, wearing the appropriate gears, and with this you are aware that you are not in harm's way.

Popular beaches around the world that offer reef surfing adventures include the El Segundo, California beach, the Cable Beach in Perth, and a beach in Boscombe, UK which is believed to have 30% bigger waves and known to double the surfing adventures in UK yearly.

This means a celebration for the surfers since they can be in the US, the South Pacific, or the UK and they can still reef surf whenever they want.

If you're in the Philippines, there's always the beautiful Siargao. Enjoy surfing then!
