Of course when you go to the Philippines you have to stay in Metro Manila for a while. For the shopping, which is pretty cheap after conversion. Check out the different malls, especially Greenhills. If you have friends who are locals, ask them to accompany you to Divisoria, which will definitely be an experience (though it's not for the weak at heart!)
And since you're in Manila, try to visit the nearby (3 hours?) beaches/resorts in Laiya, Batangas, like Coco Grove, Balai, and La Luz. These are around 3 hours away from Metro Manila. You can also go to Puerto Galera, which is 45 minutes-2 hours away, depending on what boat you will ride.
And last but definitely not the least, you can check out Boracay, which I must say, is loved by the foreigners. There are a LOT of good resorts there, but my friend just totally loved Nami because it was quieter than the other places there.
