Any recommendations for where a young singleton can learn to Scuba Dive abroad?
With some holiday days left I thought I might learn to scuba dive (this year) and take a holiday at the same time. But as everyone I know is broke or busy and I'll most likely be on my own I would rather go with an operator / outfit that's reasonably hip. Whilst a mixed crowd is fine I don't really want to end up on a trip with all families / elderly / couples and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good scuba outfit with this is mind?
Cheers
The social side to the sport more or less includes families so it will be difficult to find an exclusively singles outfit just by checking individual shops, you'll just luck out if you do get on a course consisting solely of hip singles. You could on the other hand, check here:
http://www.singledivers.com/
which is a site deicated to singles diving. There's a few other sites similar, that offer vacation packages and will set up room mates. I'm unsure if they have any packages for open water students.
Probably the number one destination that has what you're looking for, is Thailand. Many dive shops and areas to choose from. Phuket in particular.
I'm curious though. You could do this course or at least a majority of it at home. Even if you only did the academics, you'd save some of your vacation time for actual diving. PADI has a referral program that allows you to do your schoolwork at home and the certification dives at your vacation destination. I'm not a big fan of this, since you're learning in an easier environment as a rule, but at least it would maximize your vacation time. The better route would be to do all of it at home in what's probably a tougher environment but teaching you a few things you'd not learn in a warm water environment and having that entire vacation time open to diving instead of stuck in class. I can understand that some people just don't want to set foot in colder water period but by doing at least the academics at home you could skip to the fun stuff right off the bat.
